Project
Kite Fighter Worldwide
A tournament style PvP competition, enhanced by web3, for a global audience.
project
App UI/UX & Game Direction
Deliverables:
- Comprehensive Brand Package
- Define & document entire game
- Adobe Xd prototypes
Objective
Originally devised by the founder as a VR game, Kite Fighter pivoted to a mobile web3-enhanced game to leverage accessibility and incentive for it’s core demographics in India, South East Asia and South America. The goal, to tap into a huge underserved market with a game that could become a global competitive phenomenon.
Unique Challenges
Design for the audience
Many cultural considerations were made when designing the look and feel of the brand and product to touch on the aesthetic sensibilities of our audience.
Intuitive, yet intriguing
The interface needed to thoughtfully package large amounts of information and menus into a visual system that was both easy and satisfying to use, while allowing multi-language flexibility.
Wallet Friendly Web3
Due to the economic conditions of the core audience, the web3 features needed to run on a fast, cheap and efficient network, and the wallet onboarding needed to be 100% in-app and non-geodependent.
Management Mode
Battle Mode
Making a highly competitive game experience that translated across cultures was a welcome experience.
We arrived at a colorful retro vibe that used common palettes from our core regions.
To allow for a flexible multi-lingual text-based UI we developed the slash menu model. Using an infinitely expandable yet linear list, complex menus could be navigated without losing context of location in the menu.
The formula was simply: parameter/…/value. Between the endpoints could be any number of sub-parameters.
project
Web3 Gamification
Deliverables:
- Identify EVM network that best accomodates our audience
- Develop a minting and rewards system that drives repeat playability
- Design digital collectibles that pay homage to the regions and cultures where Kite Fighting is popular.
Objective
Our goal was to offer a high dimension of gameplay beyond the F2P mode, which actively incentivizes non-paying players to unlock the P2E mode, thus engaging them to invest more attention into the game to grow their kite collection and become a more competitive opponent.
Unique Challenges
Network Constraints
Web3 gaming requires low fees and fast transactions to even be feasible. Combine that with the financial constraints of our demographics and this became a non-negotiable.
On boarding non-web3 natives
With the game revenue primarily dependent on using the web3 features, users had to be able to jump into the action with little to no knowledge of crypto or NFTs.
Rethinking P2E
We didn’t want this game to become just another speculative bubble. For this reason, significant thought was put into systems that would make the asset value be more directly tied to the game utility.
In-App NFT Market
Collectible Game Assets
Network
We chose to build the game on the Polygon network to take advantage of the low fees, growing web3 gaming community, and international adoption.
Additionally, by subsidizing the majority of gas fees we could lower user friction and eliminate a significant number of interruptive transaction approvals.
Wallet
By default the game used an “in-app” custodial wallet from Venly. Users could opt for an advanced wallet mode to select other supported web3 wallets.
Purchases
Players could earn or purchase the native off-chain tokens via their app store payment method. Both non-NFT and NFT game assets could be purchased in-app with the native token or using USDC or MATIC loaded to their wallet. The native token could also be converted to USDC or MATIC for easy currency transfers.
Unique Kite Builder Smart Contracts
Players are rewarded with kite component NFTs (ERC1155). When a full set is collected they can inter them into a kite builder interface where, upon completion, the component NFTs would be burned and a new Kite NFT (ERC721a) would be minted containing the specs of the components used.
